Job eligibility:  You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in Chemistry or Pharmaceutical Sciences with experience in Synthetic Organic Chemistry and/or Medicinal Chemistry

Job description: You will be working in the research group Medicinal Chemistry (UAMC) on one of the following research topics:

Research topic 1: explore the mechanisms underlying visceral hypersensitivity in the field of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). You will be involved in the design and synthesis of serine protease inhibitors and activity-based probes for IBS protease profiling. The new series of serine protease inhibitors will be used for further validation in preclinical models of IBS.

Research topic 2: explore the molecular mechanisms involved in ferroptosis, which is a new type of regulated cell death caused by iron-dependent excessive lipid peroxidation of cellular membranes. Ferroptosis signatures have been reported in human pathologies such as acute kidney injury, chronic liver disease, atherosclerosis and neurodegeneration. You will be involved in the design and synthesis of new ferroptosis inhibitors that will be validated in cellular assays and tested in in vivo animal models.

Next to experimental research, you will write project reports for your supervisor on a regular basis, write scientific papers and support grant writing. 

They offer an appointment as a postdoctoral researcher for a period of one year, with a possibility of renewal for one additional year.

Your gross monthly salary is calculated according to the pay scale for a principal research fellow (academic assistant staff, AAP).

The planned start date is 1 February 2021, or as soon as possible after that date.
